People Like Us

Chris Pine plays a smooth deal-maker who finds out that his estranged father has passed away.  So he returns home to his estranged mom, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, and learns a lot about his family he never knew.  Elizabeth Banks co-stars as a single mom/barmaid with a heart of gold.

While watching this film, my appreciation for it waxed and waned a bit.  It has a great ensemble cast and at times it's poignant and engrossing.  At times it's cliche, unnecessarily deceitful and contrived.  But overall I enjoyed it and left the theater feeling fulfilled.  Those who appreciate a good dysfunctional family drama should definitely check it out.
