The Way Way Back

Don't be confused. This is not a prequel to 'The Way Back', the prison camp escape and man vs. nature drama from a year and a half ago.  This one's actually a coming-of-age dramedy featuring 'Little Miss Sunshine' alumni Toni Collette and Steve Carell, and it's about an awkward teenager and his summer at the shore with his mom, her boyfriend, and his daughter.  And like 'Little Miss Sunshine' it balances comedy and drama adeptly and features great performances by the entire ensemble cast.  But as usual, it's Sam Rockwell who steals the show as the father figure who helps this troubled teen deal with his issues.  It reminded me more than a little of 'Adventureland' from 2009.  Pair it with that or with the recent 'Kings of Summer' for a double shot of coming-of-age dramedy awkwardness.

  1. Not a bad assessment. I think you mightve been generous even.
