August: Osage County

I almost hate to say it but Meryl Streep does it again with another really strong performance as an embittered cancer stricken woman whose husband takes off, which brings the whole family back to the plains, where old wounds are opened up again and new revelations are made.  Streep and Julia Roberts shine the brightest, but the entire ensemble cast is terrific, including Ewan MacGregor, Chris Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch, Margo Martindale, Juliette Lewis, Julianne Nicholson, and Dermot Mulroney.  For those of you who love a great dysfunctional family reunion, this drama is definitely for you.  Based on a Pulitzer prize and Tony award winning play, the writing is really top notch.  And the more uncomfortable the scenes get, the more powerful it becomes.

Grade: A

Who is this movie for?  It's a must see for anyone who loves a good dysfunctional family drama sprinkled with lots of dark comedy, anyone who loves a great off-Broadway play, and anyone who wants to see Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, amongst others, at the top of their games.

  1. well said Brain. I went to see it with some of my family and we agreed that it's not a feel good movie, it's a feel superior movie, regardless of how dysfunctional your own family might be. Win/win!
