Ping Pong Summer

I was hesitant to rent this one on VOD, but since it's playing as a free beach screening at the upcoming Nantucket Film Festival, and I won't be able to make it, I decided to watch it before I leave.  But, oh boy, was it a waste of time and money.

Taking place in the mid-80's, it revolves around an awkward teen who spends the summer with his family in Ocean City, Maryland, lusting after the hot girl, all the while being bullied by the pretty boy.  But things may turn around when the sage Susan Sarandon teaches her protege the ways of ... ping pong.  It's a poor man's 'Karate Kid' meets 'The Way Way Back'.  And even with cameos of Lea Thompson, John Hannah, Amy Sedaris, and Judah Friedlander, don't be fooled.  It's just not worth your time.

'Ping Pong Summer' is now available on Video on Demand.

Grade: D
