Gabriel

Rory Culkin is Gabriel, a young man who isn't quite right.  While he can seem quite normal at first, it quickly becomes clear he suffers from some emotional problems or mental condition.  At the start of the film we find him on a bus en route to tracking down an ex-girlfriend.  And from there we get deeper insight into him and his family.

I didn't expect it at all, but there's something so totally captivating about this film, largely due to Culkin's unbelievable and mesmerizing performance.  It is bar none the finest I've seen all year.  Writer/director Lou Howe and Rory Culkin should both be extremely proud of what they created here on undoubtedly a shoe-string budget.  This is dysfunctional family drama at its best.

Now available on Video on Demand.

Grade: A+

Who is this movie for?  It's a must see for fans of dysfunctional family dramas and terrific nuanced performances.  See this at home on VOD this weekend instead of going out to see the overrated Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.  It's my favorite movie of the year so far.

Jurassic World

After several weeks of disappointing wide releases in theaters, I'm happy to report that finally there's one definitely worth seeing:  Jurassic World!  Of course, I won't spoil any plot for you, but frankly plot isn't the reason to see it.  The story is pretty much exactly what you expect.  (This is somewhat disappointing, but not enough to damper the experience.)  And the human characters are all good but, again, they're not the reason to see it.  This one's all about the dinosaurs.  And those dinosaurs look real and they're spectacular.  The visuals are amazing.  And once it gets going, it's a major adrenaline rush.  See it on the biggest screen in 3D and feel like you're a part of it.

Grade: A

Who is this movie for?  Did you love the first one back in 1993?  Yup, me too.  You'll love this one too.
