Passengers

Chris Pratt plays one of 5,000 hibernating passengers in suspended animation on a spaceship en route to a newly colonized planet.  But a problem occurs and he is accidentally awoken early.  Passengers is an interesting, enjoyable, and refreshingly original character-driven sci-fi film that draws you in with performances by a handful of likeable actors and then, unfortunately, veers off course in its third act.  It's worth seeing if you're tired of depressing art house films and big budget action films, but I do wish it had a stronger ending.

Grade: B+

Who is this movie for?  If you'd fancy spending a few hours with Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence, and Michael Sheen on board a spaceship, then go for it.  I enjoyed the ride.

Assassin's Creed

One might easily assume that any film with a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling, and Michael K. Williams must be worth seeing.  But as the old adage goes, you should never assume.  The critical piece of information I left out is that this movie is based on a video game, and that never turns out well, no matter how much talent is involved.  Assassin's Creed is a stylized, action-heavy mess, jam packed with so much exposition that I was lost from the start and never caught up to any semblance of a story worth following.

Grade: C

Who is this movie for?  If you're a big fan of the video game, you might enjoy it.  Otherwise I would skip it and see almost anything else instead.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Easily one of the most anticipated films of the year, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story details the backstory of how the rebel alliance made it possible to destroy the Death Star in the original Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.  Featuring mostly new characters in the Star Wars universe, led by Felicity Jones, but also including Mads Mikkelson, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, and Forest Whitaker, this stand alone story sustains the quality and entertainment value we've come to expect.  It's not as much of a classic as the other entries, but the few faces you will recognize that pop up add enough giddy fun to make this required viewing for any Star Wars fan.

Grade: A-

Who is this movie for?  Star Wars fans, both old and young, will be adequately entertained.  And if you don't see it, you'll be the only one.  Do you want to feel left out?

La La Land

For a slew of reasons, La La Land has been one of the most anticipated films of the fall.  For one, it reunites the now classic pairing of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.  For another, it's written and directed by Damien Chazelle, the boy wonder who burst onto the scene in 2014 with the brilliant and totally original film Whiplash (which won J.K. Simmons a long deserved Academy Award).  Chazelle's follow-up is another total original, this time a musical love letter to Los Angeles.  Now, I know, you probably don't like musicals.  Most everyone I mention this film to says that very same thing.  But this musical has been beloved since it played at Venice, Telluride, Toronto and virtually every other film festival over the last three months.  Even Tom Hanks couldn't stop singing its praise at a Q&A for Sully in Telluride, where he was supposed to be talking about his own film.  (I'm sure director Clint Eastwood must have LOVED that!)  So, in short, it's likeable, original, and fun to look at and to listen to.  And one musical won't kill you.  So give it a chance because it's probably going to win the Oscar for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards.

Grade: A-

Who is this movie for?  Those who love musicals will love it.  And those who don't will still probably dig it.

Collateral Beauty

Love.  Time.  Death.  These are the three essentials to appeal to in advertising, according to Will Smith's mantra at the beginning of the film.  As a confident and successful partner in his firm, as well as a loved husband and father, he has everything a man could want.  And then tragedy strikes, and Smith must confront love, time, and death in order to return to a fulfilling life.  This Capra-esque drama, set during Christmas in New York, boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Kate Winslet, Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley, Naomie Harris, and Michael Pena.  How can you go wrong with that cast?  You can't.  It's pretty likeable.

Grade: A-

Who is this movie for?  If you like holiday classics like A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life, then you'll more than likely enjoy this one as well.

Jackie

Natalie Portman has been on the receiving end of a whole lot of praise, awards nominations, and critics' best lists for her performance as Jackie Kennedy following the infamous assassination of her husband.  And the praise is due, since her impersonation of Jackie is spot on.  In fact, I can't imagine anyone doing a better job.  The problem is, despite a lot of rave reviews, this film is a total bore.  It's artistic, rather than interesting.  In other words, it's the kind of film that makes people hate awards shows and believes voters to be out of touch with what regular people like to watch.  Truth be told, I'm not a fan of any of director Pablo Larrain's work, despite how beloved they all are by other critics.  So, because of the great performance, this is my favorite of Larrain's.  But I'd still rather take a nap.

Grade: C+

Who is this movie for?  It's too artsy fartsy for me.  See it at your own peril.  Just don't say I didn't give fair warning.
