A Monster Calls

Lewis MacDougall plays a young boy dealing with a lot.  His mom (played by the omnipresent Felicity Jones, currently also starring in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) is quite ill.  His grandmom (Sigourney Weaver) isn't very maternal.  And he's being bullied in school.  But when a tree monster appears, it may be of some help.

Don't make the mistake of writing off this film as a kids' movie.  A Monster Calls is many things.  Part fantasy.  Part fairy tale.  Part family drama.  All terrific.  And while it's certainly suitable for older kids, it's really just as good if not better for adults.

Grade: A

Who is this movie for?  It's really a very emotional and poignant film, that to me was reminiscent of one of my favorites, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.  If you like emotional family dramas, definitely seek this one out.
