If you're not familiar with the 2015 underseen gem Sicario, helmed by master filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, then you are sorely missing out. It is one of the most gritty, thrilling films in recent history. But, if you haven't seen it, it need not stop you from going to see Sicario: Day of the Soldado in theaters now. They could each be seen as stand alone films depicting America's war on drug cartels. Aside from Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro reprising their roles, the two films are only very loosely related. And in fact, it's not even clear (at least for most of the film) if this entry is a prequel or a sequel. But what is clear, especially after seeing it a second time, is that this is also one of the most gritty, thrilling films in recent history and one of the best of the year. You should definitely go see it.
Who is this movie for? If you loved the first one, you'll love the second. And even if you haven't seen the first, it's a welcome break from the traditional, predictable summer blockbusters. Definitely go and see it so that they make a third.
